What is a semen analysis?

A semen analysis includes a general evaluation of the semen quality, sperm count, sperm motility, sperm agglutination (clumping), and progression of the sperm. The sperm morphology test looks closely at individual sperm and checks for abnormal shapes in the head, neck or tail. From these results, the functional sperm count or the number of sperm that can fertilize an egg can be calculated.

What is a vaginal ultrasound examination?

A vaginal ultrasound exam is a way of imaging the uterus and ovaries using high-frequency sound waves (similar to sonar). This gives information about the lining of the uterus as well as follicle (egg sac) development.

Why use an ovulation predictor kit?

For ovulation monitoring, Dr. Berger recommends using an ovulation predictor kit. This is a urine test the wife performs at home to predict when she will ovulate. You should call the office to report your LH surge, so that an appointment can be scheduled for you to be seen on that day. This is the most critical day in your cycle for ovulation monitoring, which may include a cervical mucus exam, blood tests, and an ultrasound. If you have had intercourse within 24 hours of detecting your surge, a post-coital test can be performed to assess sperm survival.

An appointment scheduled on the day of your LH surge usually lasts 30-45 minutes. Please call the office between 8:00 and 8:30 AM to report your surge. You will be seen that same morning before 11:30 AM so that if needed, appropriate hormone assays can be performed and the results can be reported to you later in that afternoon. This is especially important when couples are considering artificial insemination in the cycle.
